What does the mental rotation test measure?
It measures spatial ability — turning shapes around in your mind's eye. You compare two figures and decide whether one is merely a rotated copy or a flipped mirror image. Shepard and Metzler's 1971 Science paper showed reaction time grows linearly with rotation angle, famous evidence that people literally rotate images in their minds. This test applies the same principle, presenting angles from 0 to 180 degrees and computing your own rotation speed.
How do I read my accuracy and rotation speed in ms per degree?
The core metrics are accuracy over the 48 main trials and mean reaction time on correct trials, with same-shape and mirror accuracy broken out separately. Rotation speed (ms per degree) is the slope of how much slower you get per extra degree of rotation — smaller means faster mental turning. Slowing down at larger angles is entirely normal; in fact it is the signature of genuinely rotating the shape. If accuracy is low, the speed measure may be uncomputable or unreliable, so secure accuracy first.
Can spatial ability improve with practice?
Yes — spatial skills are among the better-documented trainable abilities. Repeating mental rotation tasks makes judgments faster and more accurate, and plenty of research links performance to experience with Tetris-style puzzles, 3D games, and building or drafting activities. That said, much of the initial gain is a practice effect from learning the task's tricks, so for genuine change, baseline yourself on runs made after the practice round feels comfortable.
How often should I retest, and how do I use the trend feature?
Around every two weeks is a comfortable cadence. Results are saved and each retake shows the change from previous records, so watch accuracy and rotation speed (ms per degree) together: faster speed with falling accuracy means you got hasty, while both improving marks genuine progress. On tired or unfocused days, performance tends to crumble first on the large-angle trials, which makes the trend a handy read on your condition too.
