What it measures

The time sense test is a time-production task: you gauge a set length of time with your body, without any clock. Tap the button once to start, and tap again the moment you feel the target has passed. There are three targets, 2, 5, and 10 seconds, each repeated three times for nine trials in random order. You are asked not to count or tap out a rhythm, because only then does the raw feel of your internal clock show through rather than a counting strategy.

Psychology calls the way we experience the passage of time temporal cognition, and it has repeatedly been shown that time feels faster or slower depending on how much attention is devoted to time itself and on arousal level; Zakay and Block's attentional-gate model is the classic account. This task is Soundary's own implementation inspired by that experimental paradigm; it does not use any standardized clinical test or norms.

A tap within 0.3 seconds of starting is treated as accidental and ignored, and there is a pause of about 0.8 seconds between trials. No elapsed time is ever shown on screen, and the whole test takes around two minutes.

How to read your score

The headline result is your mean time error (%). For each trial, the absolute difference between produced and target time is divided by the target and multiplied by 100, then averaged over the nine trials, so stopping one second early or late on a 10-second target both count as a 10% error. Lower is more accurate: under 10% is labeled very accurate, 10 to 20% fairly accurate, 20 to 35% average, and 35% or more as large deviation.

The detailed results add bias, which shows direction, and consistency. Bias is the mean of the signed errors: within plus or minus 5% is balanced, negative means under-production (stopping early, an internal clock that runs fast), positive means over-production (stopping late). Consistency averages, across the three targets, the coefficient of variation (standard deviation divided by mean) of the three productions for each target: under 8% is very steady, under 15% typical, and above that means large trial-to-trial fluctuation. You can also see the mean production and signed error for each of the 2, 5, and 10 second targets.

With only nine trials, a single large slip (for example, a late stop tap) can swing the average considerably. The bands above are reference boundaries chosen by Soundary, not standardized norms, so it is better to read the result as the state of your internal clock today rather than a verdict on ability.

What affects the result and how to use it

Time sense is highly sensitive to arousal and attention. Experiments report that caffeine, anxiety, and tension speed up the internal clock and push you toward stopping early, while sleepiness, fatigue, and boredom push you toward stopping late. When attention is pulled away by noise, notifications, or wandering thoughts, time feels shorter than it is, which tends to produce over-production. If you slip into counting, your error drops sharply, but that reflects a strategy rather than your sense of time.

To follow a trend, repeat under the no-counting rule at a similar time of day and in similar condition, and look at whether the direction of bias and your consistency stay stable rather than the mean error alone. Logging it on the same day as an attention or mood test lets you connect a tilt in your time sense with that day's arousal and mood.

This is a self-check, not a diagnostic instrument. Individual differences in time sense are naturally large, and a large-deviation result does not signify any condition. If, however, managing time is persistently hard in daily life and you often miss appointments or deadlines to the point of disruption, it may be worth considering a professional evaluation that includes attention.

Repeating a few days apart and checking whether the direction stays the same or shifts with your condition reveals your own pattern.

Can I count in my head?

Counting cuts your error sharply, but then you are measuring a rhythm strategy rather than your sense of time, which defeats the purpose. The rule is to stop by feel alone, without counting or keeping a beat. If you tend to count without noticing, try resting your attention on your breathing or fixing your eyes on one point on the screen.
