What does the pattern memory test measure?
It measures visuospatial short-term memory — holding many locations as a single scene. Several tiles on a grid light up together for one second, then go dark, and you tap every square that was lit, in any order. Unlike sequential span tests that build location by location, you must encode the whole layout like a photograph; this grid-pattern paradigm traces back to Phillips's 1974 work on short-term visual memory.
How do I interpret my level and score?
Level 1 starts with 3 tiles, each level adds one more, and the grid grows too — level 20 shows 22 tiles on a 7-by-7 grid. Three wrong taps within a level cost one of your three lives and you retry that level; when all lives are gone the test ends, and your score is the highest level cleared. Many people hit their limit around levels 7–10 (9–12 tiles), but familiarity with the format matters a lot, so your own trend is the more meaningful benchmark.
Does practice improve visual memory scores?
Scores rise noticeably with practice. First runs tend to undersell you because the format is unfamiliar, and after a try or two you develop chunking strategies — grouping tiles into shapes like an L or a diagonal — that reach higher levels on the same memory capacity. Since much of that gain is strategy and familiarity, if you want to track raw capacity, set your baseline from runs made after the format feels routine.
How often should I retake it, and how does the trend feature help?
Every one to two weeks works well. Results are saved and each retake shows the change from previous records, so once the early practice-effect phase has passed, the trend of your best level reflects how your visual memory condition is moving. Test at a similar time of day in a similar state, and jot down sleep or fatigue on unusually low days — it makes the trend much easier to interpret.
