When this check is worth taking
This check helps when you are about to start investing and cannot tell how much of your money belongs in deposits versus stocks, when you lose sleep in a downturn and keep checking your account and wonder whether you have overreached, when the opposite has happened and chasing other people's gains left you with more exposure than you could handle, or when you are deciding how to manage a lump sum with a fixed deadline such as a housing deposit or wedding fund. Risk tolerance is how much volatility and potential loss you are willing to accept between the hope of gain and the fear of loss, and neither high nor low is good or bad in itself.
The check consists of 12 scenario and attitude items familiar to individual investors, such as how you would manage a spare lump sum, how you would react to a 25 percent drop in a stock you hold, your view of leverage, less-proven assets like crypto and new listings, money you must spend in two years and the share of risky assets you feel comfortable holding. Each item is scored 0-3, giving a continuous 0-36 score and one of five levels. Soundary wrote the items with reference to research on measuring financial risk tolerance; the check is not a financial institution's investor suitability profile nor a translation of any standardized scale. There are no right answers, and the result is most accurate when you imagine your own money is at stake.
What to do with your result
The 0-36 total is read in five levels. A score of 0-7 is conservative, putting capital preservation first; certainty feels comfortable, but it is worth considering how inflation erodes purchasing power over the long run. A score of 8-14 is cautious, suited to gaining experience with small amounts you could lose without disrupting your life. A score of 15-22 is balanced; you can swing aggressive or defensive depending on conditions, so setting your own rules in advance, such as time horizon and loss limit, helps. A score of 23-29 is active, where checking how you actually react in a downturn and keeping an emergency fund and diversification matter, and 30-36 is aggressive, where the habit of separating money you cannot afford to lose from risky assets is especially important. These levels are Soundary's reference thresholds.
Risk tolerance is easily swayed by market mood and recent gains or losses. Measured in a rally it can read high; measured right after a crash it can read low. So retake it every six to twelve months, and after a major loss or a change in your finances, to find the range of your true disposition. A high score does not guarantee you will actually cope well in a downturn. Pair it with the loss aversion scale to see how heavily you feel losses, and with the investor bias check to look for biases such as overconfidence and herding; together they reveal the gap between disposition and behavior. More important than the disposition itself is whether it fits your financial situation and time horizon. This result is for reference only and is not investment advice; any investment decision and its outcome remain your own responsibility.
How scores are interpreted

FAQ
How is it scored and how are the levels divided?
You answer 12 items on a 0-3 scale for a total of 0-36. It is read in five levels: 0-7 low (conservative), 8-14 below average (cautious), 15-22 average (balanced), 23-29 above average (active) and 30-36 high (aggressive). A higher score means your hope of gain outweighs your fear of loss. These levels are Soundary's reference thresholds.
If my risk tolerance is high, is it fine to invest aggressively?
Having a high tolerance is not the same as being able to afford the risk. Capacity is set by your finances: emergency fund, income stability, time horizon and dependents. Tolerance is how comfortable you feel within that capacity. Even with a high tolerance, a small financial cushion calls for a low share of risky assets. This result is for reference only and is not investment advice; any investment decision and its outcome remain your own responsibility.
Does the result change with market conditions?
Yes, it can. Scores tend to run high after a rally and low right after a crash, and that gap itself shows how much market mood sways your judgment. Repeat the check every six to twelve months to learn your range, and if you size your risky assets to your lowest score, your portfolio will be easier to hold through a downturn. This is general guidance, not individual investment advice.
Is this the same as the investor profile questionnaire at a bank or broker?
No. A financial institution's investor profile questionnaire is a regulatory step to confirm product suitability, whereas this check is a psychological self-assessment written by Soundary with reference to risk tolerance research. Its 12 items are a reference for looking at your own mind between hope of gain and fear of loss, not a document on which to base a product purchase. Before actually investing, use the institution's procedures and consult a financial professional.
