What it measures
A verbal fluency test asks you to generate as many words as you can that meet a given condition within a time limit. This test has two 60-second rounds. Round one is semantic (category) fluency: type animal names as they come to mind. Round two is phonemic (letter) fluency: type words that begin with the letter F. Whether a word starts with F is checked automatically.
Producing words quickly requires searching your mental lexicon systematically (moving between clusters such as farm animals and sea animals), remembering what you have already said to avoid repeats, and suppressing words that break the rule. The task therefore shows executive function and working memory operating together with word-retrieval speed. Since Benton reported reduced word production after frontal lobe damage, it has been a staple of neuropsychological assessment, and category and letter fluency appear in widely used batteries such as CERAD and the D-KEFS.
Note, however, that the original fluency tests are spoken aloud in front of an examiner who scores them. Soundary's version is our own implementation in which you type into a text box, so typing speed mixes into the result, and whether a word really is an animal is not verified automatically. It is an exploratory self-check that does not replace a standardized clinical test or its norms.
How to read your score
The headline result is the total number of valid words across both rounds. A valid word has at least two characters, meets the round's rule (in round two, starting with F), and appears for the first time within that round. Re-entering a word counts separately as a perseveration and is excluded from the score, and rule violations or entries that are too short are tallied separately as well. The app labels a total of 28 or more as high, 16 to 27 as average, and 15 or fewer as low.
The detailed results show valid words, perseverations, and rule violations or invalid entries per round, plus a timeline of how many words you produced in each interval: 0 to 15, 15 to 30, 30 to 45, and 45 to 60 seconds. Output is usually highest in the first 15 seconds and tapers off; if it keeps flowing in the later intervals, your strategy of switching between clusters is working well. Your typed word list is shown as is, so you can check for yourself whether each word fits the category.
The 28 and 16 boundaries used here are reference values chosen by Soundary. Clinical tests interpret scores against norms by age and years of education, but those norms cannot be applied to this typed version in which no examiner scores category membership. The result is best used for comparison with your own earlier attempts.
What affects the result and how to use it
Typing speed and input device are the biggest variables: the same person produces different counts on a phone keyboard and a PC keyboard, so use the same device when tracking a trend. Next come vocabulary size, education, age, and fatigue or drowsiness at the time of testing. Word output also tends to drop when you are depressed or highly anxious, much as people talk less, so reading it alongside your mood state helps interpretation.
The practice effect is relatively small, but repeating the same category can give a slight edge as words from last time come back to you. Check the trend at intervals of several weeks, and look beyond the total at whether perseverations are rising or the final 15-second interval is emptying out. Deliberately switching subcategories when retrieval stalls (home, farm, sea, jungle) raises output, but that is a strategy effect rather than a change in ability.
Verbal fluency is widely used in dementia screening and executive-function assessment, but this web test is not such a clinical tool and does not determine any condition. Regardless of your result, if conversations often stall because words will not come, or you have noticed a clear increase over recent months in failing to recall names of people or objects, please seek a formal neuropsychological evaluation from a psychiatrist or neurologist.

These boundaries are Soundary's reference values, and because you type rather than speak, they cannot be compared directly with the age-based norms of clinical tests. Results depend heavily on keyboard type and typing speed, so compare against your own records taken on the same device.
Does a word that is not an animal still count?
Yes. The current version does not automatically verify category membership; it checks only word length, the letter rule in round two, and duplicates. That is why the results screen shows your typed word list as is and asks you to review it yourself. Entering words that break the rule raises the number but strips the test of its meaning, so it is best to play it straight.
Will my result differ from a spoken version?
Yes, it can. Clinical verbal fluency tests are spoken aloud to an examiner who scores them, whereas here you type, so output is reduced by keyboard speed and typos are handled differently. This version is therefore an exploratory self-check and does not stand in for the fluency scores of batteries such as CERAD or the D-KEFS.
