FAQ

How are attachment styles categorized?

Modern research treats attachment as two continuous dimensions rather than boxes: attachment anxiety and attachment avoidance. Low on both is secure; high anxiety only is anxious-preoccupied; high avoidance only is dismissing-avoidant; high on both leans fearful-avoidant.

What do anxious and avoidant attachment actually mean?

High anxiety means you're sensitive to signs of rejection and want frequent reassurance and contact. High avoidance means closeness feels uncomfortable, so you share less and handle things alone. Neither is good or bad — they're different strategies for managing intimacy.

Can your attachment style change over time?

Yes. Attachment is less a fixed trait than a habit built from relationship experience, and studies repeatedly show scores shifting after stable partnerships, close friendships, or therapy. Retaking the test every few months is a good way to see the movement.

If I score anxious or avoidant, should I see a counselor?

This is a self-check, not a diagnosis. A style by itself isn't a problem, but if conflict or breakups keep disrupting your sleep, mood, or daily life, counseling helps. Bringing your result sheet along makes it easier to start the conversation.
