How scores are interpreted

FAQ
How do I interpret my eating attitudes score?
Each of the 10 items scores 0-3, for a total of 0-30. In this test, 0-7 suggests a healthy range, 8-14 mild caution, 15-21 moderate caution, and 22-30 a high level. A higher score means stronger tendencies toward restriction, food preoccupation, bingeing, compensatory behaviours and body dissatisfaction. The bands are provisional, pre-validation cut-offs, and the result is a screening reference, not a diagnosis.
When do I need to see a professional?
At 15 or above, if thoughts about food and weight are affecting your mood, relationships or daily functioning, counselling is recommended; at 22 or above, seek a psychiatric evaluation as soon as you can. Above all, this is only a screening tool: regardless of your score, if your weight keeps dropping toward underweight, if you make yourself vomit or use laxatives or diuretics, or if bingeing followed by compensatory behaviour keeps recurring, the physical risks are real and you should see a doctor right away. The earlier eating problems get help, the smoother recovery tends to be.
How do I tell dieting apart from an eating disorder?
The key is flexibility and how much of life it takes over. Healthy dieting can adapt to circumstances, and a broken rule is simply followed by a normal next meal. It looks more like disordered eating when thoughts about food fill much of the day, forbidden-food and calorie rules keep tightening, breaking a rule triggers intense guilt or a binge-and-compensate cycle, and your weight dictates your mood and self-worth. Starting to avoid meals with other people is another important warning sign.
How often should I retake this check?
This check asks about the past 4 weeks, so every 4 weeks is a sensible interval. If you have started a diet or entered a stressful stretch, retake it a month later to make sure the score is not climbing. Saved results show which way your eating habits are moving. That said, daily weigh-ins and daily retesting can themselves feed preoccupation with food and body, so it is better to stick to the interval you set.
