How scores are interpreted

FAQ

How do I interpret my resilience score?

Each of the 8 items scores 0-4, for a total of 0-32, and higher means stronger recovery. In this test, 0-12 suggests low resilience, 13-19 somewhat low, 20-26 good, and 27-32 high. The bands are provisional, pre-validation cut-offs, so use them to track your own change over time rather than as an absolute grade.

If my score is low, do I need professional help?

A low score is not a character flaw; it is closer to a signal that your capacity to recover is currently depleted. That said, if you score 12 or below and also have low mood, anxiety or insomnia, or daily functioning has been impaired for more than two weeks, talking to a mental health professional is recommended. Right after a major stressor, pairing this with a depression (PHQ-9) or anxiety (GAD-7) check gives a fuller picture.

Is resilience innate, or can it be built?

Temperament plays a part, but research consistently finds resilience to be a trainable capacity. Proven builders include regular sleep and exercise, practising noticing and naming your emotions, cultivating relationships where you can ask for help, and the habit of breaking problems into small solvable steps. Programs based on cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) have also been shown to strengthen resilience.

How often should I retake this test?

This test asks about your typical self over the past month, so every 4 weeks is a sensible interval. Retaking it after a major change such as a job move, relocation or loss, or after starting resilience-building efforts like exercise or counselling, makes the change easy to see. Saved results let you compare when your strength dipped and when it recovered.
