What it measures
The subitizing test asks you to report, without counting, how many dots appeared in a very brief flash. A fixation cross appears at the center for 0.45 seconds, the dots flash for 0.18 seconds, and a 0.25-second mask immediately covers them to prevent counting from an afterimage. A 1 to 9 number pad then appears and you tap the number you saw. Set sizes run from 1 to 9 dots, three trials each for 27, plus one extra trial each of 3, 4, and 5 dots, for 30 trials in all. It takes about three minutes.
People recognize the number of up to three or four objects at a glance without counting, a capacity called subitizing. Kaufman and colleagues coined the term in 1949, and later research has repeatedly shown that beyond about four items accuracy drops and reaction time lengthens markedly with each additional item, as the visual system switches to a different process, counting or estimating. Trick and Pylyshyn explained this in terms of a capacity limit in visual attention.
This test is Soundary's own implementation inspired by that experimental paradigm; it uses no standardized test or norms. Subitizing is an index used in research on number sense and attentional capacity, and it does not directly measure mathematical achievement or intelligence.
How to read your score
The headline result is your overall accuracy (%) across the 30 trials. The most important index in the detailed results is your subitizing span: counting up from 1, the largest set size up to which accuracy stays at 90% or higher without a break. With only three or four trials per set size, this effectively means the largest size you never got wrong. For example, if you got every 1, 2, 3, and 4 dot trial right and missed one 5 dot trial, your span is 4. The app labels a span of 4 or more as above average, 3 as typical, and 2 or less as narrow, noting that the adult average is 3 to 4.
Reaction time is measured from the moment the number pad appears until you tap, and mean RT is shown separately for the 1 to 4 and 5 to 9 ranges using correct trials only. A larger gap between the two means you grasped small sets at a glance but counted or estimated larger ones, so you can see whether the boundary between the two processes described in the original research shows up in your own data. An accuracy-by-set-size table is also provided so you can see where things start to wobble.
The gauge showing your position relative to other users is a reference estimate based on Soundary user data, not a standardized norm. Because there are few trials per set size, a single mis-tap can change your span considerably, and for five or more dots it is easy to get lucky or unlucky depending on the arrangement. Reading the accuracy table and the reaction-time gap together is more accurate than the span number alone.
What affects the result and how to use it
A 0.18-second exposure is shorter than a blink, so it is easy to miss unless your eyes are fixed on the central cross. Screen brightness, the device's refresh rate, eyesight, and whether you are wearing your glasses also matter. When you are drowsy or tired, attentional capacity shrinks and performance tends to wobble around four dots, and distracting surroundings such as notifications or noise worsen results. Rushing the number pad invites mis-taps, so concentrate on seeing accurately and then tapping.
The practice effect is modest, though familiarity with dot arrangements can help a little. To follow a trend, repeat every few weeks on the same device, at the same brightness and similar time of day, and look beyond the span at how accuracy changes between 4 and 5 dots and whether the reaction-time gap between the two ranges holds. Since this task captures the momentary capacity of visual attention, viewing it alongside the selective attention and sustained attention (SART) tasks lets you separate the breadth of attention from its endurance.
This test is a self-check and not a diagnostic tool of any kind. Subitizing span varies widely between individuals, and a narrow span does not indicate a problem. Regardless of your result, if you notice changes in vision itself, such as sudden difficulty seeing letters or objects or blurring on one side, see an eye doctor; and if long-standing, serious difficulty with number concepts or arithmetic is interfering with school or daily life, consider a professional learning and cognitive evaluation.

How does the test work?
While you look at the cross in the center, dots flash for 0.18 seconds and are then covered by a mask. On the 1 to 9 number pad that follows, tap the number you saw. What subitizing span is typical?
Research indicates that adults generally grasp up to 3 or 4 items at a glance without counting, and the app describes the adult average as 3 to 4, labeling 4 or more as above average, 3 as typical, and 2 or less as narrow. These boundaries are Soundary's reference values, and because each set size has only three or four trials, a single mis-tap can change your span.
Why do I keep getting 5 or more wrong?
That is normal. Beyond about four items, the process shifts from grasping at a glance to counting or estimating, and 0.18 seconds is far too short to count, so you have to rely on estimation. Lower accuracy and longer reaction times for five or more dots are exactly the pattern described in the original research. The gap between your mean reaction times for 1 to 4 and 5 to 9 dots in the detailed results shows that boundary.
Does a good subitizing span mean I am good at math?
Not directly. Subitizing reflects the momentary capacity of visual attention and basic number sense, whereas mathematical achievement depends on many more factors such as language, working memory, and education. It is a topic in research on children's number-sense development, but this test is an adult self-check and does not assess learning ability or intelligence.
