What it measures
This task looks at how quickly you can swap the rule you are holding in mind, that is, cognitive flexibility. A red or blue circle or square appears one at a time, and a banner shows which rule applies right now. Under the color rule red goes left and blue goes right; under the shape rule circles go left and squares go right.
The rule changes with roughly a 50% chance on each trial, and only the very first trial is never a switch. Trials right after a change (switch trials) are usually slower and more error-prone than trials where the rule stays (repeat trials); this gap is the switch cost. It is a classic executive-function paradigm first described by Jersild (1927) and refined by Rogers and Monsell (1995).
Switch cost matters because it reflects not raw hand speed but the mental price of suppressing the old rule and loading the new one. It is the brief stumble you feel when you hop between tasks at work or when a conversation suddenly changes topic.
How to read your score
There are 32 trials, each with a 3-second window; no response within 3 seconds counts as an error. The headline score is accuracy (correct ÷ 32 × 100). Mean reaction time is computed from correct trials only, and switch cost is the mean RT of correct switch trials minus the mean RT of correct repeat trials, in milliseconds.
Switch costs typically fall in the range of tens to a few hundred milliseconds. A larger positive number means switching rules cost you more; a value near zero or negative means little switch burden showed up in this session. When accuracy is low the timing metrics become unstable, so check that accuracy is reasonably high before interpreting switch cost.
Thirty-two trials is a short run, so a single result cannot pin down your ability. On a first attempt the cost tends to be large simply because reading the rule banner is unfamiliar; it usually shrinks over two or three sessions through practice. Touch-screen input latency can also add a few tens of milliseconds.
What affects the result, and how to use it
Sleep loss, caffeine, time of day, fatigue and background noise all feed directly into reaction-time metrics. Switch cost also tends to grow gradually with age, and glancing between a banner and a stimulus on a small screen adds its own load. Measuring on the same device, at a similar time and in a quiet place makes comparisons far more meaningful.
The most useful approach is to watch the trend rather than a single score. Repeat every 2 to 4 weeks and see how switch cost moves once accuracy has settled. It also works well for checking changes after you start a new work or study routine, or after adjusting your sleep habits.

My accuracy was low. Is something wrong?
Any of the 32 trials that runs past 3 seconds counts as an error, so accuracy is often low on a first attempt simply because reading the rule banner is unfamiliar. Mixing up the left and right buttons or losing sight of the screen is also common. If accuracy stays clearly low after one or two more tries, note it together with how you were feeling and consult a professional if needed.
How often should I repeat the test?
Given practice effects, every 2 to 4 weeks is a good interval. Too often and familiarity alone shrinks the switch cost; too rarely and day-to-day condition swings are hard to filter out. Keep the same device, a similar time of day and a quiet setting, and look at the trend across several sessions. It takes about 3 minutes, so repeating is easy.
