What it measures
Processing speed is the cognitive ability to carry out a simple but unfamiliar rule quickly and accurately, over and over. Here a key pairing 9 symbols with the digits 1–9 stays visible at the top of the screen; symbols appear one at a time below, and you tap the matching digit. The time limit is 90 seconds, and the number of correct conversions in that window is the headline score. The symbols are drawn fresh from a pool of 16 each session, so memorizing them in advance gives no advantage.
The format follows the same principle as digit-symbol substitution tasks such as the Wechsler Coding subtest or the DSST, but it is Soundary's own on-screen implementation. Processing speed is known as one of the most sensitive indicators of age-related cognitive change, and it is also among the first functions to slow when overall brain efficiency dips due to low mood, fatigue or lack of sleep. Afterwards, a 9-item surprise memory round asks you to recall each symbol's digit without the key, revealing whether learning happened without you intending it (incidental learning).
How to read your score
The headline score is the number of correct conversions in 90 seconds. Forty-five or more is considered fast, 30 or fewer slow, and anything between is the typical range. The surprise memory round is reported as correct pairs out of 9; since random guessing would yield about 11%, 3 or more suggests learning beyond chance. Six or more is labeled good memory and 3 or fewer as having relied mainly on the key.
The detailed result shows accuracy (correct out of total responses), mean reaction time on correct responses, stamina comparing correct answers in the first 45 seconds with the last 45, and a learning curve of reaction time across three equal thirds of the run. A drop of 150 ms or more from the first third to the last reads as strong learning, any drop above zero as mild learning, and no drop as a flat curve. The same symbol never appears twice in a row and there is a short gap between consecutive inputs, so hammering the keypad does not raise your score.
What affects the result and how to use it
As a speed test it is the most sensitive to your input device: small screens invite more mis-taps and a mouse can be slower than touch, so keep the same device and posture when tracking trends. Lack of sleep, fatigue and late-evening sessions noticeably reduce your count, while caffeine can add a little. Processing speed is a textbook example of a function that declines gradually with age from the twenties onward, so interpret your result within your own age group.
Because the symbols change every time, memorization helps little, but people do get better at scanning the key, so counts usually rise on the second or third attempt through practice. Repeat every few weeks and watch the trend in your count and stamina. If you repeatedly stay at 30 or fewer on days when you feel well, or a clear drop from your usual level lasts for weeks and you feel slower getting things done, try the mood and attention checks too and consider a professional evaluation if needed. This test is a self-check, not a diagnostic tool.

Is this the same as the Wechsler Coding subtest?
It follows the same family of principles but is not the same test. Soundary built its own touch-screen version of the symbol-to-digit substitution idea used by Coding and the DSST; the 90-second limit, 9-symbol key and surprise memory round are this app's design. Scores cannot be compared directly with a standardized intelligence-test subtest administered with norms.
If my processing speed is slow, what does that mean?
Processing speed slows easily with lack of sleep, fatigue, low mood, medication, age and more, so a single result cannot point to any specific problem, and this test is a self-check rather than a diagnostic tool. If you repeatedly score 30 or fewer on days when you feel well and notice you are slower getting things done in daily life, try a mood check as well and consider talking to a professional.
