What does the aim test measure?
It measures visuomotor coordination — spotting a target with your eyes and moving your hand precisely to it. Each time a circle appears, your visual cortex pinpoints it, your parietal lobe computes distance and size, and your motor cortex fires the movement, all in a split second. The scoring rests on Fitts's law (1954): farther and smaller targets take longer to reach — a principle still central to UI design today.
How do I read the metrics — movement time and throughput?
Average movement time (ms) is how long each hit took on average — lower is faster — and accuracy shows how few taps missed. Throughput (bits/s) divides target difficulty by movement time, blending speed and accuracy into one summary number. Results are also broken down by target size (about 6, 10 and 14 mm), so check whether small targets trip you up. Note that touch and mouse results differ too much to compare directly.
Does practice improve aim?
Yes — aiming is one of the most trainable skills there is. Just as pro gamers drill daily with aim trainers, repetition tunes the eye-hand loop, shortening movement times and cutting misses. The catch is that hardware matters a lot: changing mouse sensitivity or screen size shifts scores regardless of skill. To see genuine improvement, always measure on the same device with the same settings.
How often should I retest, and how do I use the trend feature?
At about 90 seconds per run, once a week is an easy cadence. Results are saved and each retake shows the change from your previous records, so a trend of movement time and throughput on the same device reveals whether training is genuinely accruing, or whether your hands slow down in tired stretches. If you switch devices, treat it as a fresh baseline rather than a continuation of the old trend.
