FAQ

How do I interpret my SAS-SV score?

Each of the 10 items is scored 1 to 6, giving a total of 10 to 60. Higher totals suggest more difficulty controlling use. The original study suggested cut-offs of 31 for men and 33 for women, but these are screening signals for attention, not a diagnosis.

At what score should I seek professional help?

Judge by impact, not the number alone. If sleep loss continues, work, study or relationships suffer, and repeated attempts to cut back fail, it is worth talking to a mental health professional regardless of your score, especially if depression or anxiety is also present.

Is smartphone addiction an official diagnosis?

No. Current diagnostic manuals do not list smartphone addiction as a separate disorder; only gaming disorder is partly recognised. The term commonly used is smartphone overdependence, and SAS-SV is a screening scale for difficulty controlling use, not a diagnostic test.

How often should I retake this test?

Every two to four weeks is reasonable, since habits change slowly. Retesting a month after a change such as turning off notifications or limiting night-time use makes progress visible. Treat scores taken during exams or holidays as rough reference only.
